It is truly amazing how a smell, a flavor, or even just a picture can take us straight back to a specific time and place, and even make us suddenly feel exactly how we felt back then. Thanks for sharing these beautiful and hard memories, Aki.

Chef Aki! First, I am so happy you made a full recovery from that eye surgery. Our senses are in such demand as chefs. The possibility of losing one can be devastating to us. Second, I like to believe your mom's curry and that fantastic omurice gave you the pep to keep going.

What a heartfelt story, Aki! I love that your mom’s curry equals a hug to you🤗 The power of food and memories!

Aki moroto's avatar

Haha! My mom is quite spicy too. She’d be all- “alright. Enough hugging. Now go sweep the front yard and throw the trash. Let’s go, chop chop!!”

I am going to make this in your honour - sending you a sincere virtual hug. I too make my kids food when I am feeling I miss them and I wish I could do more. Your mom sounds very sweet.

Thank goodness your eye was saved.

Your writing is superb Aki.

Thank you, Sheryl! Yes- kids may not express it fully, but they remember their mothers cooking and that because the barometer for what they deem tastes good for the rest of their lives! Cooking is love, right?

Oh Aki, this is just so heart warming on all levels. Little chef Aki making eggs to finesse the family curry; your mum who amuses me no end; your battle with your health and the big tupperware container of frozen curry. But most of all the the thread of love, resilience and good taste I see running through your life. Thank you for sharing this memory and giving me something to make this weekend to honour you.

You are so inspiring to me Aki, I think you are so talented in so many ways, obviously with food, and certainly with writing, but you know what, I think having an open heart and mind is a great quality I see in you too. People just adore you, that’s a pretty nice thing.

Grateful for that!
